Olympic Worldcup 2012 - Sail for Gold - Weymouth GBR - Day 1

The 6th 2012 Worldcup began yesterday at the Olympic site in Weymouth with unusually light conditions. Almost all Olympic Teams are present at this rehearsal of the Olympic Regattas taking place at the same venue in about seven weeks from now, over 700 athletes from 58 nations. Only one race was sailed by the Starboats and Finns, sailing on the offshore course late in the afternoon. Hestbaek/Oleson DEN were the winners in the Stars ahead of Clarke/Björn CAN. The surprise winner in the Finns was Caleb Paine USA (not selected for the Olympics) ahead of Aleksej Selivanov RUS. On the inshore courses, sailing was also possible in the morning but with a 5-8 kn only accompanied by a strong current. Later in the afternoon, a second race was completed, resp. a 3rd for the 49ers. Evans/Powys GBR clearly dominated the 49ers with the day ranks 1/1/3, while Delle-Karth/Resch AUT lead the closely packed persuers. Once more outstanding the World Champions Belcher/Page AUS wining both heats of their group in the 470 ahead of Asher/Willis GBR back after a long absence due to injury. More and more up to speed are the Australian 470 women Rechichi/Stowell AUS on rank 2 with the same number of points as the leading Mills/Clarke GBR. In the windsurfers, Julien Bontemps FRA is on top, one point ahead of Toni Wilhelm GER, while the rest of the fleet is 10 points and more behind. Two of the favorites are also already on top in the women windsurfers with Zofia Klepacka POL ahead of Bryony Shaw GBR. Leading in the Women Matchrace Round Robin is Olivia Price AUS with a 6-0 score ahead of Siljia Lehtinen FIN 4-0. Surprisingly weak the first day of the key favorite Anna Tunnicliffe USA on rank 7 only with a disappointing 2-4 record. All results and the daily report.
