The Swiss Olympic Team

Wednesday, June 6, 2012
Yesterday, Swiss Olympic approved the Swiss Sailing Olympic Team for Weymouth 2012. In addition to the sailors having fully met the selection condition - Flavio Marazzi/Enrico De Maria SUI (Star), Nathalie Brugger SUI (Laser Radial) and Richard Stauffacher SUI (RS:X-Windsurfer) - the young newcomers Yannick Brauchli/Romuald Hausser SUI were given Olympic tickets. During the past year, they realised the best 470 results since a long time, but missed the nation limit set by Swiss Olympic. Not selected are the Swiss Laser sailors in spite of the fact, that Christoph Bottoni SUI missed the selection limit at the Hyères Worldcup event only by a small margin, a limit by-the-way, that is much harder to achieve in Sailing than in other sports, considering the high number of competitive nations. Left out was also the development talent Guillaume Girod SUI with a steep learning curve this year and the potential for further progress.
The Swiss Olympic Team will therefore be as small as never in the last years, which had to be expected after the replacement of the direct financial support to athletes by inefficient activities provided by the newly created independent Sailing Team AG during the last seven years. The Communiqué.
