IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe 2016/17 Day 29
Much action at the Vendée yesterday on the southern oceans: The leader Armel Le Cléac'h FRA rounded Cape Leeuwin on the southwest point of Australia after 28 days and 5 hours smashing the existing record of François Gabart FRA established 4 years ago by 5 days ! Alex Thompson GBR, 81 nm behind Le Cléach'h this morning, remained also far below the old mark. Problems however for the 3rd-ranked Sébastien Josse FRA: One of the foil appendages did not stand the continuous stress and broke partly away. He is now examining if and how an adequate repair is possible. Even worse was the incident of Romain Attanasio FRA sailing in the closely packed mid-fleet, who damaged both rudders in a collision with flotsam. He is now on the way to South Africa to try to repair the Open60 in a sheltered bay.
