IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe 2016/17 Day 32
Today, Armel Le Cléac'h FRA and Alex Thompson GBR 144 nm behind will reach the Pacific Ocean with a rather uncomfortable welcome by a depression with a 40 kn wind. The 3rd-ranked Sébastien Josse FRA has been forced to abandon the race with his damaged boat and is now heading for Australia, reducing the fleet of 29 starters on 22. New on rank 3 is now the Vendée rookie Paul Meilhat FRA, who - with his conventional Open60 - succeeded to follow the pace of the foiler constructions. The closely packed mid-fleet group has now rounded Cape of Good Hope. The backmarkers are Didac Costa ESP, started 4 days late because of a boat damage shortly after crossing the starting line, and now ahead of Sébastien Destremeau FRA.
