IMOCA Open 60, Class 40, Ultime, Multi 50 Route du Rhum StMaloGuadeloupe FRA Day 1
Yesterday, the start to the 40th Route du Rhum, the inter-franco Solo Transatlantic Race, leading from St-Malo FRA to Guadeloupe FRA in the Caribbeans, was given. With the new foiling yachts, the chances are high for new records, as in addition, the meteo forecast is favorable as well. However, a gale-force storm front and rough seas with up to 8 meter wave are awaiting the fleet crossing the Bay of Biscay, and it remains to be seen, how the foils will sustain in these conditions.
The big Ultime-Trimarans immediately have taken the lead and this morning, it was the favorite Sébastien Josse FRA on 'Edmond de Rothschild' on first. Just at press deadline (6h UTC) a few minutes ago, Josse was forced to abandon the race as one of the hulls was damaged. Here the news. François Gabart FRA on 'Macif' is the new leader. The third Ultime-Foiler-Trimaran of Armel Le Cléac'h FRA ('Banque Populaire') had also an equipment failure and with the necessary repair stop in Roscoff, he is 66nm behind on rank 6 for the moment.
The first Multi 50 are still relatively close together. Armel Tripon FRA leads 13nm ahead of Thierry Bouchard FRA and another 7nm of Lalou Roucayrol FRA.
The first four Open 60 are separated by 2nm only. Vincent Riou FRA ('PRB') leads one mile ahead of Yann Eliès FRA ('Ucar-St.Michel') and Jéremy Beyou FRA ('Charal'), another mile behind is Alex Thomson GBR ('Hugo Boss') on 4th. The first woman Isabelle Joschke GER/FRA is 9th,
In the largest fleet, the Class 40, Louis Duc FRA is 3nm ahead of Yoann Richomme FRA.
Apart from the professionals, a number of amateur skippers are underway in the two Rhum-Classes (Multi- and Monohull). First in the Rhum-Multis was Fabrice Payen FRA. Loïc Peyron FRA on a replica of the first winner-boat of 1978 (a small trimaran) was on rank 11 with a 66nm backlog. In the Rhum-Monocoques, Sydney Gavignet FRA is first, Sébastien Destremeau FRA with a old-school Open 60 is on the 2nd place.
All ranking lists of 2h a.m. UTC this morning, der race tracker (not available with certain browsers) as well as the news.
