IMOCA Open 60, Class 40, Ultime, Multi 50 - Route du Rhum - Day 5

Friday, November 9, 2018
The bulk of the fleet will have to endure another rough day today, as the third and heaviest storm front will pass the Bay of Biscay. Many participants have been seeking shelter in harbours of the Spanish North Coast, or were even forced to do so due to damages.
The leading group with the trimarans, the Open 60 and the first Class 40 is underway in normal sea coditions direction trade winds that theMaxi trimarans of François Gabart FRA ('Macif') leading 140nm ahead of Francis Joyon FRA ('IDEC') have already reached.
No change on top of the Multi 50, where Thibault Vauchel-Camus FRA on the most western course is now 160nm ahead of Erwan Le Roux FRA. However, his position is at risk, as there the wind conditions are difficult to predict,
In the Open 60, it it Boris Herrmann GER ('Malizia') who is trying an attack going West. He was already on rank 2 this morning UTC and his backlog on the leader Alex Thomson GBR with his 'Hugo Boss' was down on 13,6nm. Also Paul Meilhat FRA on the only conventional non-foiling Open 60, as well as Vincent Riou FRA ('PRB') with deficits of 49 respectively 61nm are keeping contact with the leaders.
The Class 40 are about to pass the most southern point of Portugal. Yoann Richomme FRA is still leading 45nm ahead of Phil Sharp GBR and 56nm of Aymeric Chappelier FRA.
