OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 Rio de Janeiro BRA Day 9
Four Medal Races were on the program yesterday sailed in moderate, but very unconstant and tricky winds close to the Sailing Center, and surprising results were to expect.
Giles Scott GBR had his Gold before the Medal Race already. Vasilij Zbogar SLO grasped now Silver in the Finn after two Olympic Bronze medals in the Lasers. As winner of the Medal Race, Caleb Paine USA jumped on the podium with the last race to open the US Sailing Team's chase on medals.
Two of the three medalists were known in the Lasers Standard before the Medal Race. The surprise was, that Tom Burton AUS, 10 points behind Tonci Stipanovic CRO, finished on top at the end of the day. His rank 3 was good enough to pass the Croate who was penalized in the dog fight before the start already and lost contact with the fleet. Sam Meech NZL defended his Bronze medal 2 points in front of Robert Scheidt BRA, winner of the Medal Race, who missed his sixth Olympic medal.
No change in the Medal Race of the Lasers Radial, where Marit Bouwmeester NED confirmed her role as favorite and won ahead of Annalise Murphy IRL and Anne-Marie Rindom DEN.
Most exciting was the Medal Race of the Nacra 17. Santiago Lange/Cecilia Carranza ARG got a penalty at the start, but came back on rank 3, but the disaster struck again at the last mark, and the infringement against the AUT boat had to be corrected with penalty turns. This incident did not stop the Argentinians to come back on the final downwind finishing on rank 6, just good enough to take Gold. A happy day for the veteran, age 58, who saw also his sons qualify for the 49er Medal Race. Only one point behind, Jason Waterhouse/Lisa Darmanin AUS won Silver thanks to more race wins compared to Thomas Zajac/Tanja Frank AUT with the same number of points who gets Bronze.
The two 470 and two 49er classes sailed their last qualification races. Hannah Mills/Saskia Clark GBR extended their lead in the 470 women on 20 points, cannot be overtaken in the Medal Race, and are therefore the premature Olympic Champions 2016. The fight for Silver and Bronze however will be exciting as Aleh/Powrie NZL, Haeger/Provancha USA, Lecointre/Defrance FRA and Kondo/Yoshioka JPN are separated by 4 points only.
In the 470 men, the three Medal winners are known, but the sequence will be decided in the Medal Race today. Fantela/Marenic CRO seem to have a solid 11 points' advantage, but much can happen in the double-points-no-discard final heat. Mantis/Kagialis GRE on rank 2 are only 2 points ahead of the defending Olympic Champions Belcher/Ryan AUS.
Not a surprise is the premature 49er Gold Medal of Peter Burling/Blair Tuke NZL, leading with a huge 34 points' advantage. Heil/Plössel GER and Outteridge/Jensen AUS will fight for Silver or Bronze on Thursday. Only Fletcher/Sign GBR 10 points behind could theoretically interfere in this duel.
Three teams jointly lead in the 49erFX. Echegoyen/ Betanzos ESP, Grael/Kunze BRA and Hansen/Salskov DEN all have 46 points. Maloney/Meech NZL follow only one point behind.
The Skiff Medal Races will conclude the Olympic Rio Regatta tomorrow.
