For a change after a week with mostly light winds, a fresh breeze partly exceeding 25 kn filled in during the Medal Races yesterday on Palma Bay. The Race Officer cancelled racing for the 'modern' 49ers and Nacra 17-catamarans after the 49erFX Medal Race where only 2 of the 10 participants survived, the winners Viktoria Jurczok/Anika Lorenz GER trailing over the finish line with a broken mast.
In the Final of the best 5 Finns, Max Salminen SWE had the upper hand. In the 470 men, Isozaki/Takayanagi JPN moved on top as the leading Fock/Dackhammar SWE and the 2nd Xammar/Rodriguez ESP finished down in the fleet on 6th and 8t and dropped 1 respectively 2 points behind the Japanese. Afrodite Zegers NED - a concert pianist by profession - together with Anneloes Van Veen NED defended the first place in the 470 women as 2nd behind the race winners Skrcypulek/Ogar POL remaining on rank 2 overall. The Polish big-breeze specialists had their day in the RS:X windsurfers. The Finals, sailed by the best three athletes after two knock-out rounds, were won by Zofia Noceti-Klepacka POL ahead of Manhjia Zheng CHN and Stefania Elfutina RUS, and Pawel Tarnowski POL ahead of Ivan Pastor ESP and Taehoon Lee KOR.
