50 years Golden Globe JubileeRace and a new movie
In July, the start of the 50th edition of the first single-handed non-stop circumnavigation race 'Golden Globe' (now called Vendée Globe) will be take place in Les Sables d'Olonne. The winner of the initial race was Robin Knox-Johnson GBR. He was the only one among 11 participants who managed to finish the race in 1969. The event website.
For Donald Crowhurst GBR, the race ended tragically. When he realized, that his ambitions to win the competition with his self-made trimaran disappeared, he started turning in circles between Africa and Brazil giving wrong position indications until the time the leaders rounded Cape Horn. He then re-joined the race as the leader. When recalculating his reported positions, however, he realized that his fraud could be found out easily, he jumped overboard. His trimaran was later found intact. The documentary movie about this initial race and its events is in the cinemas now. The video trailer and the Preview.
