World Sailing Midyear Meeting London GBR Olympic sailing about to be demolished sign a petition
Referring to and misinterpreting theIOC Olympic Agenda 2020, Management of World Sailing lacking any contacts to the roots of our sport, i.e. the Athletes, Clubs and Classes, came up with proposals to almost completely destroy the present structure of Olympic events. "Move from a sport-based to an event-based programme" as addressed by the IOC should always be subordinate to another stated IOC principle: "Athletes remain at the centre of all ... proposals."
As Council, representing the Member National Authorities, naively did not realize what kind of subversion was underway, many meritourious former IYRU and ISAF Officials, athletes and individuals from allover the World stood up with a petition to demonstrate to the World Sailing Midyear Meeting attendees the resistance to the proposed changes. In the coming days, World Sailing will decide on the Olympic events for 2024. The selected equipment will be decided on at the Autumn Meeting. Up to 8 of the present Olympic classes could be deleted.
Here the link to a report and the petition already signed by over 8'500 concerned sailors within three days. See also a detailed comment in Sailing Illustrated.
