The Star Class has been, the 470 and Finn Classes are about to be excluded from the Olympic Games by World Sailing. Sailing is based on well-organised Classes around the World with local regattas up to the Olympic circuit of the best with the Games as pinnacle for top athletes.
May 21-25 in Barcelona, 350 Master Finn Sailors from Europe, Americas, Africa and Oceania coming from 32 countries will sail their Championship. Here the list of attending nations: Germany (42), Argentina (1), Australia (12), Austria (10), Bahamas (1), Belgium (4), Brazil (8), Canada (1), Chile (4), Czech Republic (8), Denmark (4), Slovakia (1), Spain (24), The United States of America (8), Estonia (1), Finland (5), France (27), The United Kingdom (29), Greece (2), The Netherlands (38), Hungary (19), Italy (24), Monaco (1), Norway (3), New Zealand (6), Poland (6), Portugal (1), South Africa (4), Russia (11), Sweden (14), Switzerland (21) and Ukraine (8).
As Council, representing the Member National Authorities, naively did not realize what kind of Olympic event subversion was underway, many meritourious former IYRU and ISAF Officials, athletes and individuals from allover the World stood up with a petition to demonstrate to the World Sailing Midyear Meeting attendees the resistance to the proposed changes. In the coming days, World Sailing will decide on the Olympic events for 2024. The selected equipment will be decided on at the Autumn Meeting. Up to 8 of the present Olympic classes could be deleted.
