AC-50 - 35th America's Cup - Hamilton BER - Day 1

AC-50 - 35th America's Cup - Hamilton BER - Day 1 The 35th America's Cup Challenge began yesterday on the Bermuda Great Sound in shifty light winds (8-10 kn) just enough to foil. Two races were on the program with the Cup Defender 'Oracle' with Jimmy Spithill AUS one point up thanks to the bonus as Qualification Series winner.
But it was not 'Oracle's' day. A penalty for crossing the line early and a clearly slower cat during race 1 made up for a clear win for 'Team NZL' of Peter Burling NZL. Even worse was race 2, as 'Oracle' starting on the favored position, could not avoid, that the New Zealanders were first at mark 1 and extended their lead with with the faster boat and perfect handling to over 600 m. But on leg 5, the tactian Tom Slingsby AUS of 'Oracle' almost reduced the 1:35 min backlog with a genious split and sailing the shifts perfectly. But a completely failed gibe got the Americans fall from the foils and 'Team NZL' flew away concluding the race with a 1:28 min advantage, ending the day one point up on 'Oracle'.
Somewhat fresher winds have been announced for the two races today. Will 'Oracle' be able to find a solution to keep the Kiwis back ?

AC-50-Catamaran - Louis Vuitton Cup - Hamilton BER - Day 13

AC-50-Catamaran - Louis Vuitton Cup - Hamilton BER - Day 13 Races 4, 5 and 6 of the Challenger Playoff Final were held yesterday in winds from 16 kn to 11 kn. The big factor for the day was that the teams both changed their daggerboards in opposite directions. The Swedes went for the small, high speed boards which are best suited to stronger winds while the Kiwis opted for the bigger low speed, light wind boards. Racing was very close. 'Artemis' (Nathan Outteridge AUS) had three times the better start and led at the first mark or more, but 'Team NZL' (Peter Burling) passed them in two of the three heats. However, the victory in the last match was by one second only, and this after a 16 sec lead at the penultimte mark. A major tactical error with a splash down at the mark before the final leg made them almost loose race 6.
With a 4-2 score, the crucial races today are difficult for 'Artemis'. While the Kiwis need just one win to qualify as Challenger for the America's Cup against 'Team Oracle', the Swedes would need to win all three matches today.
