OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Final results

OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Final results The Olympic Regatta 2016 in Rio de Janeiro ended yesterday with the 470 and 49er Medal Races. The conditions with 15 to 18 kn winds allowed to complete spectacular races.
In the 470 women, the Gold Medal went to Hannah Mills/Saskia Clark GBR prematurely after the Qualifications already. Jo Aleh/Polly Powrie NZL grasped Silver and Camille Lecointre/Hélène Defrance FRA advanced on rank 3.
On top of the 470 men trio fighting for the Medals remained Sime Fantela/Igor Marenic CRO who were never in danger to loose their 11 points advantage in the Medal Race winning the first sailing Gold Medal for Croatia. Silver and Bronze was decided in a close matchrace bringing both teams to the end of the fleet. The 2012 Olympic Champions Matthew Belcher/Will Ryan AUS succeeded to overtake Panagiotis Mantis/Pavlos Kagialis GRE on the final downwind leg breaking the tie in his favour to take Silver.
In the 49er, Peter Burling/Blair Tuke NZL demonstrated once more their superiority winning the Medal Race. They have been undefeated (except in one test race) since the 2012 Olympics. The Olympic Champions 2012 Nathan Outteridge/Iain Jensen AUS are on the 2nd position, passing Erik Heil/Thomas Plössel GER in the Medal Race.
The highlight of the day was without doubt the 49erFX race, where the Medal Race finish sequence was at the same time the final overall ranking among a quartet within one point. In a fierce and furious race with many position changes, Martine Grael/Kahena Kunze BRA defeated Alexandra Maloney/Molly Meech NZL with two boats' lengths (2 seconds) to the excitement of the many Brazilian spectators. Bronze wnt to Jena Hansen/Katja Salskov DEN.

OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Day 9

OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Day 9 The ten best teams in both the 470 men and 470 women waited in vain for sufficient wind to sail the Medal Races. Today, four Medal Races are on the program. In addition to the 470s, the 49ers and 49ersFX will be racing for the Medals. The Olympic Champions in the 49ers are already known: Peter Burling/Blair Tuke NZL.
The situation in the 49ersFX is unique with three teams (Etchegoyen/Betanzos ESP, Grael/Kunze BRA, Hansen/Salskov DEN) at equal points on top and the 4th-ranked Maloney/Meech NZL only one point behind. The finish sequence today will be the ranking sequence overall.

OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Day 9

OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Day 9 Four Medal Races were on the program yesterday sailed in moderate, but very unconstant and tricky winds close to the Sailing Center, and surprising results were to expect.
Giles Scott GBR had his Gold before the Medal Race already. Vasilij Zbogar SLO grasped now Silver in the Finn after two Olympic Bronze medals in the Lasers. As winner of the Medal Race, Caleb Paine USA jumped on the podium with the last race to open the US Sailing Team's chase on medals.
Two of the three medalists were known in the Lasers Standard before the Medal Race. The surprise was, that Tom Burton AUS, 10 points behind Tonci Stipanovic CRO, finished on top at the end of the day. His rank 3 was good enough to pass the Croate who was penalized in the dog fight before the start already and lost contact with the fleet. Sam Meech NZL defended his Bronze medal 2 points in front of Robert Scheidt BRA, winner of the Medal Race, who missed his sixth Olympic medal.
No change in the Medal Race of the Lasers Radial, where Marit Bouwmeester NED confirmed her role as favorite and won ahead of Annalise Murphy IRL and Anne-Marie Rindom DEN.
Most exciting was the Medal Race of the Nacra 17. Santiago Lange/Cecilia Carranza ARG got a penalty at the start, but came back on rank 3, but the disaster struck again at the last mark, and the infringement against the AUT boat had to be corrected with penalty turns. This incident did not stop the Argentinians to come back on the final downwind finishing on rank 6, just good enough to take Gold. A happy day for the veteran, age 58, who saw also his sons qualify for the 49er Medal Race. Only one point behind, Jason Waterhouse/Lisa Darmanin AUS won Silver thanks to more race wins compared to Thomas Zajac/Tanja Frank AUT with the same number of points who gets Bronze.
The two 470 and two 49er classes sailed their last qualification races. Hannah Mills/Saskia Clark GBR extended their lead in the 470 women on 20 points, cannot be overtaken in the Medal Race, and are therefore the premature Olympic Champions 2016. The fight for Silver and Bronze however will be exciting as Aleh/Powrie NZL, Haeger/Provancha USA, Lecointre/Defrance FRA and Kondo/Yoshioka JPN are separated by 4 points only.
In the 470 men, the three Medal winners are known, but the sequence will be decided in the Medal Race today. Fantela/Marenic CRO seem to have a solid 11 points' advantage, but much can happen in the double-points-no-discard final heat. Mantis/Kagialis GRE on rank 2 are only 2 points ahead of the defending Olympic Champions Belcher/Ryan AUS.
Not a surprise is the premature 49er Gold Medal of Peter Burling/Blair Tuke NZL, leading with a huge 34 points' advantage. Heil/Plössel GER and Outteridge/Jensen AUS will fight for Silver or Bronze on Thursday. Only Fletcher/Sign GBR 10 points behind could theoretically interfere in this duel.
Three teams jointly lead in the 49erFX. Echegoyen/ Betanzos ESP, Grael/Kunze BRA and Hansen/Salskov DEN all have 46 points. Maloney/Meech NZL follow only one point behind.
The Skiff Medal Races will conclude the Olympic Rio Regatta tomorrow.

OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Day 8 Only the offshore courses where the skiffs were sailing three races had enough wind (15 kn) yesterday. The Laser Medal Races and the 470 qualification heats had to be cancelled.
In the 49ers dominated d'Ortoli/Delpech FRA with the day ranks 1/1/3 and moved up on rank 4 overall. Erik Heil/Thomas Plössel GER consolidated their 2nd rank. Outteridge/Jensen AUS on 3rd are now 15 points behind the Germans. The light-weights Sébastien Schneiter/Lucien Cujean SUI could not follow in the fresh breeze on the open sea and decended on rank 18.
A leader change happened also in the 49ersFX, where Tamara Echegoyen/Berta Betanzos ESP dominated with the ranks 1/1/4 and took the overall lead. OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Day 7

OLYMPIC GAMES 2016 - Rio de Janeiro BRA - Day 7 Yesterday, the full program was sailed in Rio in moderate winds around 10 kn.
The RS:X windsurfers were the first to conclude the Olympic Regatta with the Medal Races. Dorian Van Rijsselberghe NED and Nick Dempsey GBR were the premature Gold and Silver medalists and the interest was concentrated on the fight for Bronze. Pierre Le Coq FRA replaced Piotr Myszka POL on rank 3. The RS:X women Medal Race was very close. The leading Flavia Tartaglini ITA finished only on rank 9 and dropped out of the Medals on 4th. After a close fight between Charline Picon FRA and Peina Chen CHN, it was the French women grasping Gold just one point better. Stefania Elfutina RUS won the Bronze Medal after an impressive comeback from far behind after a missed start.
Giles Scott GBR made everything clear in the Finns winning a race also yesterday und securing the Gold Medal before the Medal Race. Vasilij Zbogar SLO is on a good way for Silver (his 3rd !), and only Ivan Klijakovic CRO could threaten him. But the Croate will probably be busy enough to defend Bronze against the all-out attacks from Caleb Paine USA and Max Salminen SWE t points behind. The Swede won Gold in the Starboats in London/Weymouth.
An overthrow happened in the Nacra-17 qualification races where the clearly leading Jason Waterhouse/Lisa Darmanin AUS had two bad races and dropped on rank 5. The veteran Santiago Lange (three times olympic Tornado medalist) with Cecilia Carranza ARG hs taken the lead 5 points ahead of Vittorio Bisarro/Silvia Secouri ITA. Thomas Zajac/Tanja Frank AUT follow on rank 3. The fleet is closely together and 7 teams can still hope for Medal.
The two 470 fleet sailed two races each. In the men, Sime Fantela/Igor Marenic CRO esxtended their lead on 11 points, Belcher/Ryan AUS and Mantis/Kagialis GRE follow on the ranks 2 and 3. Three more qualification races are on the program.
