Favorable sailing conditions - sun and a 12-17 kn breeze - prevailed off Weymouth GBR on day one of the Olympic Regatta with the Finns and Starboats sailing the first two (of 10) races, while the Women Matchracers completed four flights of the Round Robin.
In the Finns - here the report and the interims classifications - it was surprisingly Jonas Hoegh-Christensen DEN and not the favorite and superstar Ben Ainslie GBR who dominated with two race wins ahead of the Brit with two times second and Iwan Klijakovic-Gaspic CRO two times third. This leading trio has already opened a certain gap on the remaining fleet, lead by Jonathan Lobert FRA. Today, two more races are on the program.
The Starboat races were extremely close and exciting with numerous positions changes and even a dead heat in race two with Scheidt/Prada BRA and Percy/Simpson GBR crossing the finish line at the same second, where the Race Officials had to decide about the winner. Here the report. The favorites for Gold Scheidt/Prada BRA have already taken the lead with the day rank 4/1 ahead of O'Leary/Burrows IRL, the winners of the Olympic Test Event. With the same number of points follow Kusznierwicz/Zycki POL and Melleby/Pedersen NOR on rank 3. The results. Today, two more races are on the program.
In the Women's Match Race, Tamara Echegoyen ESP (defeating the favorite Anna Tunnicliffe USA), Ekaterina Skudina RUS and Olivia Powrie AUS with 2-0 scores each on top. The results.
