VOR65 - Ocean Race 2017/18 - Leg 3 - Day 8

VOR65 - Ocean Race 2017/18 - Leg 3 - Day 8 The seven teams sailing on the South-Indian Ocean face the hardest conditions encountered so far with big swells and winds above 40kn providing for dashing surf-rides. The proximity to the defined Antarctic iceberg exclusion zone forces the teams to gybe almost hourly .... much work in icy temperatures ! In the night on today UTC, 'Mapfre' with Xavi Fernandez ESP has taken the lead, 'Dongfeng' with Charles Caudrelier FRA follows only 5nm back. The rest of the fleet has slightly reduced the backlog on the leading duo. 'Vestas' with Charlie Enright USA on 3rd is now only 29nm behind, and the backmarker 'AkzoNobel' (Simeon Tienpont NED), coming back after a repair slowdown, even shortened the deficict by over 100nm during the past 24hrs. Roughly 3'000nm are left to Melbourne AUS.

Olympic Sailing - a radical modification of the Olympic Class policy ?

Olympic Sailing - a radical modification of the Olympic Class policy ? During the past week, informations about a fundamental new Olympic event structure for the 2024 Paris Games Olympic Regatta in Marseille FRA have been leaked. On December 13, World Sailing felt therefore compelled to inform about the plans with a report on the World Sailing website. By the end of the week, details on the planned structure were removed from this page, but they, hopefully, still can be found on the website of Sailing Illiustrated.
In a 90-minute - sometimes for non-Americans too chatty, but nevertheless very informative - video discussion of Tom Ehman USA with the past IYRU/ISAF President Paul Henderson CAN aired on SailngIllustrated, these plans and the role of Olympic classes in general are debated. A must-hear to learn more about the background of sailing politics.

Nacra 15 - Youth World Championship 2017 - Sanya CHN - Gold for Max Wallenberg/Amanda Björk SUI/Societe Nautique of Geneva

Nacra 15 - Youth World Championship 2017 - Sanya CHN - Gold for Max Wallenberg/Amanda Björk SUI/Societe Nautique of Geneva Never before, the decisions at a Youth Sailing World Championship were as narrow as yesterday in China. In the Nacra 15 catamarans for Mixed Teams used for the first time, the decision was made on the finish line only. With the Swiss team crossing the line as 5th, it was all about the finish of the leading Australians Shannon and Jayden Dalton AUS arriving as 8th, just not enough, as - now at equal points with the Swiss - the tie was broken in favour of Max Wallenberg/Amanda Björk, members of the Youth Squad of the Societe Nautique of Geneva (two-times America's Cup winner). The news of World Sailing.
With his World Champion's title only two years after winning the Optimist Worlds, Max Wallenberg SUI success is historical, as he is the first winning a title only two years after migrating to a higher youth class !

VOR65 - Ocean Race 2017/18 - Leg 3 - Day 6

VOR65 - Ocean Race 2017/18 - Leg 3 - Day 6 The 7 boats' fleet is about to approach the Kerguelen Islands in the South Indian Ocean this morning UTC. Drift-ice warnings prompted the Race Director to move the Exclusion Zone border up on roughly the 45th parallel. Fresh winds over 30kn have driven the teams at high speeds, more and more stretched over a longer distance. 'Dongfeng' with Charles Caudrelier FRA extended her lead on 'Mapfre' (Xavi Fernandez ESP) slightly on 11nm. 'Vestas' with Charlie Enright USA on 3rd is already 65nm behind.

VOR65 - Ocean Race 2017/18 - Leg 3 - Day 5

VOR65 - Ocean Race 2017/18 - Leg 3 - Day 5 On day 5 of leg 3, the fleet was challenged by the typical Roaring-Forty conditions with a 35-50kn wind and a 10 meter swell providing for top speeds but at the same time loading heavily on the boat and equipment. 'AkzoNobel' of Simeon Tienpont NED was forced to lower the main sail after a failed gybe as among other smaller damages, the track came off the mast. The video. A repair seems to be possible, but a major setback in the rankings is inevitable. Still clearly in the lead are the two boats on the extreme South close to the iceberg exclusion zone i.e. 'Dongfeng' (Charles Caudrelier FRA) and 5nm behind 'Mapfre' (Xavi Fernandez ESP). 'Vestas' sailing on 3rd is 100nm behind.

VOR65 - Ocean Race 2017/18 - Leg 3 - Day 4

VOR65 - Ocean Race 2017/18 - Leg 3 - Day 4 The splitted fleet is about to possibly avoid the strong frontal system with heavy winds with now four boats heading South squeezed between the depression and the iceberg exclusion zone, and three boats on a northern route to avoid the rough conditions. 'Dongfeng' with Charles Caudrelier FRA gybed even more South during the night as did the leading 'Mapfre' with Xabi Fernandez afterwards as well to avoid the worst. Extreme in the North is Dee Caffari GBR with 'Turn the tide on plastic' opting for the prudent way to deviate the front. The coming very challenging hours will be crucial for the teams' positions: Will the aggressive South or the prudent North be paying ?
