The qualifications ended yesterday with the last two races by class, sailed in a freshening 15 kn breeze. Today Saturday, the Medal Races are on the program with most of the teams in a clear pole position. Delle-Karth/Resch AUT in the 49ers with a 19 points lead on Storck/Moore USA will remain first with the Americans on a safe second place. Lehtinen/Bask FIN and Norregard/Lang DEN will fight for the Bronze Medal. Belcher/Page AUS, 10 points ahead of Coster/Coster NED, are also on the safe side, as are the Dutchmen as second, 12 points in front of Kampouridis/Papadopulos GRE 3rd. In the 470 women, Lisa Westerhof/Lobke Berkhout NED clearly lead 12 points ahead of Mills/Clark GBR, who will be challenged by Sesto/Montegur ARG and Clark/Lihan USA for the Bronze medal. The 10 points’ advance of Zach Railey USA on Jonas Hoegh-Christensen DEN should also be sufficient for the overall win. Tension is on once again in the Starboats (why should they be out of the Olympics in 2016?), where a bunch of former Olympic and Worlds Champions will fight for the medals. Scheidt/Prada BRA are 3 points ahead of Lööf/Salminen SWE, and Melleby/Pedersen NOR follow another 5 points back. The pairing in the Women Match Race is rather a surprise as Olivia Price AUS eliminated Sally Barkow USA in the Semis and will meet Lucy McGregor (3-2 vs Silja Lehtinen FIN) in the Final. The MOCR titles for the windsurfers are also practically decided, as Nick Dempsey GBR has an 18 points’ lead in the RS:X-men , while Demita Vega MEX is also 15 points ahead in the RS:X-women.
