Star World Championship 2012 Hyeres FRA Day 3, slight improvements for Clarke/Bjoern CAN 15th and Mendelblatt/Fatih USA 18th
The forecasted breezy day arrived yesterday in the Bay of Hyères after the initial two light wind days, and the third race was sailed in a 18 kn wind at the start, increasing to over 25 kn in the last round of the race. The Olympic Champions Ian Percy/Andrew Simpson GBR, already winners of the windy Semaine Olympique two weeks ago, dominated the race winning in front of Kusznierewicz/Zycki POL and Lööf/Salminen SWE. With this win, Percy/Simpson have taken the overall lead one point ahead of Scheidt/Prada BRA 2nd, relegating the former leader O'Leary/Burrowes on rank 3. With Rohart/Ponsot FRA and Kusznierwicz/Zycki, two other favorites and former World Champions are on the ranks 4 and 5. In the battle for the four open Olympic berths, Pepper/Taylor NZL (7th), Hestbaek/Oleson DEN (9th), Echevarri/Rodriguez ESP (11th) are the best placed, while Spitzauer/Habermüller AUT, Arapov/Mikulicic CRO and Papathanassiou/Tsotras GRE fight for the fourth place shortly behind. Slight improvements for Clarke/Björn CAN 15th and Mendelblatt/Fatih USA 18th overall. As from today, lighter winds have been announced again after the passage of the disturbance.
