The Laser Medal Races were the highlight of yesterday. In the Lasers Standard, not much was to dispute, as the points' gaps on top were quite considerable before the race. Tom Slingsby AUS covered his only opponent Pavlos Kontides CYP from start-to-finish and sailed him down in the fleet, adding the Olympic Gold Medal to his important collection of titles. The young Cyprus sailor can be proud having earned the first Olympic medal for his country. Rasmus Mygren SWE defended rank 3 winning the Bronze Medal. David Wright CAN ended up on 25th, Rob Crane USA is 29th. The report.
Extremely exciting however was the Laser Radial Medal Race. Separated by one point only, four athletes were fighting for the three medals. Lijia Xu CHN, 2008 Bronze Medalist, sailed a superior Medal Race, compensating even a pumping penalty. She was he clear winner of the Race, taking the Gold Medal for China. Marit Bouwmeester NED - the most successful Radial sailor during the past 12 months - finished as 2nd, coming from behind towards the end of the heat, earning Silver. The Bronze Medal went to Evi Van Acker BEL, and Annalise Murphy IRL, leading the Medal Race at the beginning, remained without Medal. Paige Railey USA secured a Olympic Diploma by finishing 8th, Tania Elias-Calles MEX ended up on 10th. The report and all results.
