Olympic Classes - Trofeo Princesa Sofia - Palma de Mallorca ESP

Sunday, March 26, 2017
Tomorrow begins the 48th edition of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia on Palma Bay / Mallorca ESP, the first encounter of the 2020 Olympic campaigners. As always after Olympic Games, a number teams have abandonded the Olympic circuit, newcomers show up or athletes change from one class to another, and in many cases, a new ranking order might emerge. The most famous migrator to a new class is Robert Scheidt BRA, 5-times Olympic medalist and multiple World Champion in the Laser and Starboat class, who will sail his second regatta in the 49er skiff class after Miami in January, not an easy task in a highclass 60 boats' fleet from 22 nations. The top Newzealanders and Australians, engaged in the America's Cup in a few weeks, will not be present, but considerable delegations from China, South America and Arab Countries bring new blood to the class.
To be noted that more and more athletes use individual media channels in addition to the official event website with information such as entry lists, results and general news. Individual websites, personal facebook pages and own youtube video channels have been launched by many.
Some classes have volunteered to test new regatta formats to make sailing more interesting for a larger public without hampering the fairness of the competition. The Finns, RS:X-Windsurfers, 470s and Skiffs have individual Sailing Instructions to be tested in view of the Worldcup Events and the Olympics.
