Volvo 65 Volvo Ocean race 2017/18 Alicante ESP Start today
Today is the day for the seven teams as - after the Prologue a week ago and the different tune-ups - the start to the Volvo Ocean Race will be given in Alicante ESP this afternoon at 14h CET, probably in moderate winds around 12 to 15 kn. Leg one leads over 1'500 nm thru the Gibraltar Strait around the Madeira POR island to Lisbon POR. We shall cover the start on this website livestream starting at 13.30h CET with Andy Green GBR as commentator.
After winning most of the preparatory regattas, 'Mapfre' with Javi Fernandez ESP (and a.o. the 49er Olympic Champions and America's Cup winner Blair Tuke NZL) is the most cited favorite.
Turbulent is the situation for the 'AkzoNobel team. Simon Tienpont NED, fired without notice, will return as skipper by court decision, but at least four four team members declined to sign new contracts: Brad Jackson (the substitute skipper for Tienpont) as well as Jules Salter, veteran VOR racer and AkzoNobel watch captain Joca Signorini (BRA) and Mr Kirby loyal mates to Brad Jackson. Tierpont plans to start this afternoon with only seven crew, using some shore team members who qualify under the Volvo safety and miles@sea rules, and who were previously listed as reserves. In the team is as female member the 49erFX Olympic Champion Martine Grael BRA.
The breaking news in Sailing Illustrated and the report from yesterday's media conference with the seven skippers.
