Friday, July 20, 2018
Six titles are already won ahead of today's closing day. Although one further final race is scheduled for today, the Junior World Champions in six of the nine classes are already determined: In the 420 boys fleet Joseph Hermus/Walter Henry USA cannot be caught up and Otto Henry/Rome Fatherstone AUS have assured their silver medal. Kacper Paszek/Bartek Reiter POL are 3 rd, seven points ahead of a chasing pack of four teams who can theoretically still overtake them. Carmen and Emma Cowles USA are on their way to successfully defend their title from the previous year in the 420 girls competition. Their lead is currently 11 points, but as they have UFD to discard they cannot afford any slip-ups today. In the girls 29er Pia Andersen/Nora Edland NOR are new world champions. Berta Puig/Isabella Cassaretto USA are currently in 2nd place and have won a medal for sure. Although they can still be overtaken by Zoya Novikova/Diana Sobirova RUS who are just three points behind. A Norwegian victory is most likely also among the 29er Boys: Mathias Berthet/Alexander Franks-Penty NOR lead ten points ahead of Seb Lardies/Scott McKenzie NZL in 2nd place, but they themselves have to defend their silver medal against Henry Larkings/Miles Davey AUS who are only five points further back. A class of their own was Teresa Romairone/Dante Cittadini ARG in the Nacra 15: Their advantage is a massive 33 points! Three teams, which are only 3 points apart, will fight today for the other medals. Geronimo Nores USA is the new junior World Champion in the RS:X-windsurfers. Nicolo Renna ITA wins silver and Fabien Pianazza FRA has the bronze medal for sure. Also among girl’s RS:X-Windsurfers the medal winners are decided: Islay Watson GBR wins the title, Veerle ten Have NZL and Giorgia Speciale ITA will make silver and bronze among themselves.
