IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe Les Sables d'Olonne FRA Day 3
After the passage of Cape Finisterre yesterday, the fleet had split: A group in the north sailed towards the cold front in the west, which brought up to 40kn wind and 5-meter waves tonight. In the very south, another group chose the direct route, leading the overall classification. A third group did opt for the middle. ----- This morning the northern group also veered south, but despite fresher winds, the favored foiler boats hardly reached higher speeds than the non-foilers in the south this morning. ----- The ranking was led this morning UTC by Maxime Sorel FRA (non-foiler), followed by Maxime Troussel FRA (Corum), the only foiler in the southern group, in 2nd place with a 13nm gap. Jean Le Cam FRA was in 3rd place, 15nm behind. The front from the west has claimed its first prominent victim tonight: Armel Tripon FRA (L'Occitane) had to turn off towards Spain after the hook of the jib halyard broke. Apparently a weak point of the new Open 60, as this is already the third such damage. Fabrice Amedeo FRA, who had to return to Sables d'Olonne for this reason shortly after the start, started again tonight. Samantha Davies GBR was 75nm behind in 12th place, Alan Roura SUI follows in 25th place with a 123nm deficit. ----- The race tracker and the reports.
