Olympic Classes Trofeo Princesa Sofia Palma ESP Day 1 the Swiss
All stress was gone for Linda Fahrni/Maja Siegenthaler SUI yesterday in the 470 women with the news, that the Rio Olympic nations' berth was confirmed by World Sailing. With the day ranks 3 and 5 in their Group, they delivered an excellent performance in the fresh up to 20 kn breeze, brining them on rank 6 overall of the interim's rankings. Yannick Brauchli/Romuald Hausser SUI however have to finish at least on a 12th nation place in this regatta to fulfill the selection criteria of Swiss Olympic. The ranks 6 and 12 in their Group would have been a good start to achieve the objective, but the 12th rank was voided because of a premature start. No other flops are permitted to qualify for the Goldfleet.
In theory, the Swiss Lasers would have an Olympia nations' qualification chance as well. The best-ranked, the veteran Olympian Christoph Bottoni SUI, is on rank 60, Nils Theuninck SUI follows on 62nd and Guillaume Girod SUI on 70th. The 150 boats' fleet is split in three Groups, and for the Goldfleet, a top-50 result is required. Maud Jayet SUI on rank 40 among the 82 Lasers Radial is just below the rank 41 cut for the moment. Andrea Nordquist SUI follows as 58th.
The light-wind RS:X men windsurfing specialist Mateo Sanz-Lanz SUI, already qualified for Rio, hat difficulties with the fresh breeze and the big waves. He is on position 39 for the moment. Elia Colombo SUI follows as 50th among the 85 participants.
Not competing is Matias Bühler SUI in the Nacra17 because of a broken thumb. Nathalie Brugger is therefore sailing with the Brazilian helmsman Joao Siemsen. They are on rank 11. In the 49ers, Sébastien Schneiter/Lucien Cujean SUI are on rank 48 of the 75 teams.
