Olympic Games 2012 - Weymouth GBR - Start today

Sunday, July 29, 2012
Today at noon (13 Uhr CET), the start to the first Finn race will be given, followed by the Starboats and the Women Matchracers. The wind forecast announces 15-19 kn, but later this week, the breeze will exceed 20 kn.
The local hero Ben Ainslie GBR is the outstanding favorite in 24 Finns' fleet. His clear objective is a forth Gold Medal in a row. Candidates for medals are also Zach Railey USA, Ivan Klijakovic-Gaspic CRO, Jonathan Lobert FRA, Pieter-Jan Postma NED or Vasilij Zbogar SLO.
In the 15 Starboats, the eternel duel between Ian Percy/Andrew Simpson GBR and Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada BRA will certainly have a follow-up. But with Kusznierwicz/Zycki POL, Lööf/Salminen SWE, Rohart/Ponsot FRA or O'Leary/Burrows IRL, a number of teams are ready to intervene, as they did frequently during the past 24 months. .
The favorite in Women's Match Race is definitely Anna Tunnicliffe USA despite of the fact, that she had a number of unexpected defeats to absorb during the past two months. Siljia Lehtinen FIN, Ekaterina Skudina RUD or Claire Leroy FRA are the first challengers. As always in Olympic regattas, surprises are possible.
We shall continuously report on the action during the races based on the information available. Unfortunately, there is no live GPS tracking available according to ISAF, a major failure in the negotiations with the IOC in our opinion. Sailing is an Internet and not a TV sport, and media-right contracts can be established accordingly to cover the interest of IOC sponsors. In 1996, we had mark-rounding details of all races on the ISAF website ... 2012 nothing ... lousy job by ISAF in the meantime. We miss Paul Henderson, who made it possible 16 years ago !
