For 79 days now, the 9 solo skippers remaining in the race have been on their way to circumnavigate the world single-handed and non-stop in their old-timers from the time of the first Golden Globe (1968). The fleet is currently in the Indian Ocean. There have already been 7 abandonments, the last one being Tapio Lehtinen FIN, sailing in second place, who suffered a water intrusion south of Cape Town that caused his 36-foot yacht (foto) to sink within 5 minutes. He managed to escape to the life raft and was later rescued by 3rd place sailor Kirstin Schäfer RSA. The race-tracker and the report.
